Blur fans have been waiting eight years for this latest album, and if you go in expecting the likes of ‘Song 2’ and ‘Parklife’, you’ll end up disappointed. However, ‘The Ballad of Darren’ is not without its unique charm. Emotive lyrics, melancholy melodies and Damon Albarn’s matured vocals create an understated yet beautiful sound. It takes a couple of listens to truly appreciate its many ornate instrumental layers, but despite being a bit of a slow burner, ‘The Ballad of Darren’ is worth taking your time with. A masterclass in musical progression. LT
