Bessie Surtees House

bessiesurtees-60.jpg Mon-Fri 10am-4pm The 18th century home of Bessie Surtees, who caused much local uproar when she eloped (by ladder out of the window) with the future Lord Chancellor of all England in 1772. A rare example of well preserved domestic architecture from the Jacobean period. Also plays home to the regional office of English Heritage.
