Roll up, roll up and celebrate the fascinating world of cogs and carnivals! The exhibition brings all the fun of a vintage funfair to The Word, featuring mechanical marvels and games which you can play, move and explore. The installation will bemuse, baffle and bewilder with 30 interactive mechanics, inspired by the fairground and created by renowned and international artists.

Long-time friends and colleagues Tom Kelly and John Grundy will have a chat on their lives and work. Tom will read from his new poetry and prose collections No Love Rations and Walking My Streets published by Red Squirrel Press. John will discuss his TV and radio work including Grundy Goes and his most recent book, John Grundy’s ‘History of Northumberland Published by Tyne Bridge Publishing.

Gerald Dickens, the great great grandson of Charles Dickens, returns to The Word with his masterful one man performance of A Christmas Carol. The internationally renowned show features more than 30 different characters and Gerald inhabits each one as his great great grandfather did over a hundred years ago.

Robert reconsiders the use and misuse of Orwell since his death and returns us to the original work and context of the writings; provides a journey through the life, the work, marriages and relationships, as well as the author’s journalism to give a contemporary insight into Orwell’s thought; examines Orwell’s views on women, colonialism, and WWII; and looks at what Orwell’s experiences tell us about his changing views of political and personal issues.
