Detail
As former Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Northumbria,Tom Bromly led one of the country’s leading art and design institutions, overseeing the merger of the local college of Art with Newcastle Polytechnic in the 60s. He was on many national committees and institutions including Royal college of Art, Chairman of the national advisory Fine Art Board, and Council member of Northern Arts. As an accomplished artist himself, Tom has exhibited nationally and has work in many private collections. Landscapes and seascapes have always had a great influence on Tom Bromly’s work, from the lattice structures of the Kent hop fields from his early life to the holiday seascapes of Southern Italy. Now retired and living in Northumberland, Tom is able to concentrate on his deep emotional attachment to the county’s landscape, in particular the sculptural quality of trees which predominate in much of his later work and in this exhibition.
