The Crack Magazine

Comes naturally…

The acclaimed Latvian American artist Vija Celmins produces work that takes its cue from natural phenomena, and you can see some of the best of it at the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle.

It doesn’t matter if it’s vast (the infinite expanse of the night sky) or it’s intimate (the delicate intricacies of a spider’s web) – as long as it’s part of the natural world then Vija Celmins is interested. Her exquisite drawings and prints make up this show, which is drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS national collection. Ceri Lewis, Senior Curator ARTIST ROOMS Tate: “Vija Celmins is an extraordinary artist whose mesmerising work combines exceptional craftsmanship with conceptual sophistication, with a career spanning more than five decades.” She adds: “ARTIST ROOMS is all about bringing great art to towns and cities across the UK, free of charge.” Well, she’s certainly done that.

ARTIST ROOM: Vija Celmins, until 4 May, Hatton Gallery, Newcastle, hattongallery.org.uk
