While Tinashe is mainly known for a handful of viral singles such as ‘Nasty’ and ‘No Broke Boys’, ‘Popstar’ cements her as a visionary who truly shines when she is given the space to craft a fully-actualised project. The production is boundary-pushing yet accessible, with each song effortlessly blending into the next in a way that makes the album feel like its own sonic world rather than simply a collection of tracks. That’s not to say ‘Popstar’ lacks variety. Tinashe’s writing is as sharp on blitzing hyperpop tracks like ‘Melatonin’ as it is heartfelt and vulnerable on stripped back acoustic guitar track ‘Heavy Weight’. An experimental, thoughtfully pieced together album. LT
