Scrooge, Santa, and Song
I’ve nary been away from Newcastle Cathedral this year, such has been the quality of their offerings, and they’ve got plenty more lined up for the rest of 2026. Not to be missed is A Christmas Carol (pictured), which is set to be performed by BBC presenter and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ impressionist Alfie Joey (30 November). Featuring masterful storytelling and a host of unforgettable characters—not to mention bags of laughs and the festive spirit—this timeless tale is a real Christmas treat. Other ‘must-sees’ I’d flag up would include Rock Choir Christmas: Songs in the Cathedral (2 December). This will see the North East Rock Choir fill the historic venue with an uplifting mix of pop, rock, contemporary tracks, and classic Christmas favourites. The ever-popular Newcastle Cathedral Choir’s Candlelit Carols are also back (16-21 December) featuring all your favourites and some less frequently heard pieces. And the LGBTQ+ choir returns with Pride at Christmas featuring Northern Pride Voices (13 December). And if you’d like to experience a different side of Santa then why not check out the St Nicholas: The Original Santa Claus tour (29 November-20 December). Here you can explore the fascinating history, traditions, and legends surrounding St Nicholas, the patron saint of the cathedral. GM
