Cutting edge stuff

Have you checked out ‘Lino North’ at Biscuit Factory yet? It brings together sixteen printmakers specialising in linocut, and it’s a real eye-opener.

Linocut, then. It utilises a small set of materials—carved lino block, ink, paper, plus pressure—but as this fabulous exhibition demonstrates, artists wield them in such incredibly imaginative ways. I love the piece (pictured) by Masha Tiplady, which really packs a bold punch, but elsewhere in the show you’ll discover an array of techniques. Some artists build images through reduction, cutting and printing a single block in successive stages. Others construct layered works using multiple blocks to develop colour, tone, and structure. But across all the pieces here, you can see that drawing remains central to the practice, and that calls for a really keen eye. Thankfully, all artists showing work here have definitely got their eye in. JL
