Mastering the Dark Arts

Students from the ‘Secrets of the Old Masters’ course step into the spotlight at The Witham in Barnard Castle with a new exhibition going by the name ‘Light and Shadow’.

Featuring charcoal sketches, vibrant acrylics, and classic oil paintings, this showcase highlights a year’s worth of work tackling everything from sweeping landscapes and delicate still lifes to expressive portraits and animal studies. Exploring the dramatic interplay of highlight and shade, the students draw directly on traditional techniques to give modern life to age-old practices. Alongside the student creations, visitors will also be treated to an extra special inclusion: a rarely seen painting by their tutor and Master Painter, Cedric Charleuf. Whether you are an art enthusiast keen on classic methods or simply looking to admire local talent, this striking collection proves that timeless skill continues to flourish in Teesdale.
