Interpol’s latest album is aptly named, as each of its 12 tracks are heavy with a brooding tension. ‘This Mirror Weighs a Ton’ carves out its own distinct soundscape among the band’s impressive discography. It’s moody, atmospheric and expansive, with innovative production choices that combine distorted post-punk guitar riffs with dreamy synths and cinematic strings to create a post-apocalyptic sonic world that is simultaneously industrial and elegant - perfectly encapsulated by the cover, a chandelier of surveillance cameras. While ‘See Out Loud’ and ‘Wake Up’ are my personal highlights, it’s an album that should be listened to from start to finish in order to appreciate the full effect of its immersive world-building.
