Ariana Grande - petal
In petal, Ariana Grande proves that she maintains a firm grip on pop music despite her recent foray into musical theatre. The album introduces a new, experimental take on her sound; her signature belt has been replaced with lighter, airy vocals, which works well to convey the specific emotion of quiet rage that permeates the majority of these tracks. petal is definitely an angry album, approaching topics such as Grande’s relationship with fame and fans with more directness than ever before, but this is delivered with poise and vulnerability amongst a dreamy, downcast soundscape of synths and distorted electronic melodies. Contrary to its lukewarm critical reception, I’m a big fan. LT
