A 1980s-set ‘Othello’ is coming to Northern Stage this September, and it promises to be one of the theatrical highlights of the autumn.

Directed by Anthony Almeida, this co-production—brought to life by Northern Stage alongside HOME Manchester, Citizens Theatre, and Royal & Derngate—places the tragedy of ‘Othello’ against the backdrop of a high-pressure 1980s landscape. It’s a setting that feels remarkably natural for a play rooted in paranoia, reputation, and intense social tension, and that seamless transition speaks to why Shakespeare’s work remains so relentlessly adaptable across centuries. Shift ‘Othello’ from 16th-century Venice to the visual and political pressure-cooker of the 1980s, and the core human fractures don’t weaken. Almeida: “This ‘Othello’ examines how behaviour, love and identity are shaped under public scrutiny and private pressure.
