The British summertime has encouraged many outdoors this year, and a whole bunch of us have been spending our Fridays at TopSoil—a rather fabulous queer gardening club in Newcastle.

It’s been a hot minute since we gave TopSoil some love, but nevertheless it has been growing all the time with a gorgeous community of resilient queer folk not afraid to get their hands dirty while creating a rather beautiful garden. Originally rooted in the idea that gardening can be seen as a radical act of resistance, these weekly sessions also thrum with ideas on sustainability, visibility and democracy. The programme itself is group-led and ideas on green-fingered topics, like how to grow your own food or make natural dyes, are freely bandied about. It all takes place at the NewBridge Project and local practitioners are regularly invited to share their work and skills; so whether you’re a master in the mud, or a completely new bud, you’ll find a home in this garden.
