As they bid adieu to their 40 year career, wacky experimental rock outfit Butthole Surfers have taken a final left turn by releasing After The Astronaut - a 1997 album shelved by Capitol Records due to being “unsellable”. It’s a woozy, disorienting listen that sprawls across genres such as hip-hop, psych, trance and electronic to serve up a maximalist array of musical flavours that are a pleasure to get lost in. My favourite track is ‘I Don’t Have A Problem’, a remix of real people’s dialogue courtesy of a phone interceptor that has an addictively unsettling quality to it. For me, an album being labelled “unsellable” is a selling point in itself. LT
