Life Support
Director: Daniele Rugo
Featuring a score by Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja, this shocking and furiously righteous documentary follows the experiences of a group of doctors working in Gaza from 2023 to 2025, utilising footage and testimonials from their phones. As only international medical staff were allowed access, this is a rare insight into what life was like on the ground in the beleaguered territory. As well as scenes in the overworked hospital the picture features unnerving footage from the street where everyday life is disrupted by incoming fire. Initially the doctors are using their phone recordings as personal diaries, but as the international community fails to step in and, feeling a sense of urgency, they decide they must bear witness and record what they see around them. What is evident is that Palestinian society itself was being dismantled and destroyed. In the most upsetting excerpts, the doctors counter genocide deniers by describing how the Israeli authorities blocked the supply of baby formula to the territories resulting in malnutrition and death. Inevitably this is very harrowing watch, but it can be inspiring too in its depiction of international comradeship and solidarity.
