MEIOSIS is the musical project of Martin Thompson and his tenth album sees him pushing an indie sound into some very interesting places. ‘Cartoon Cats (Looking For My Friends)’ deploys a louche exotica – like Nick Cave trying his hand at fronting up a house band in a shady off-souk dive bar – while ‘Eeny Meeny Miney Mo’ has a woozy monumentality that staggers into something quite cathartic. And his songwriting chops really shine through on tracks such as ‘Flutter Flutter’, which are reflective but still retain plenty of bite. The release is also given extra body by contributions from local luminaries (such as Gary Lang – St James Infirmary). DP
