Tracks of my fears
A few years ago there was a whole spate of novels that came out about a ‘girl’ in peril (despite the female protagonists being women rather than girls). Most of these novels were derivative and somewhat bland, but Paula Hawkins’ ‘The Girl on the Train’ was really top-tier stuff. The gist? During her daily train commute Rachel often sees – from the window – a man and a woman who she imagines have the perfect life. But when the female half of the couple seemingly vanishes one day, Rachel is pulled into a mystery that is filled with obsession and illusion and, ultimately, has all manner of consequences. Jump aboard this thrill-express for a knuckle-whitening ride like no other.
