The sweetest sanctuary
Café 16 inside Newcastle Cathedral has, over the past five years it has been open, firmly established itself as of one the city’s finest.
Step inside Newcastle Cathedral this summer and your eyes will immediately be drawn upward by the venue's spectacular, soaring ceiling. But while the architecture provides an undeniable “wow” moment, the real magic of Café 16 is happening at eye level. Celebrating its fifth anniversary this season, this vibrant hub has quietly become one of the city’s most valuable assets. And what makes the café such a boon for Newcastle isn’t just its newly extended hours or its delicious menus: it is the profound social impact baked into every order. It’s true! Run by local rehabilitation charity The Oswin Project, the café employs and trains prison leavers, which means it offers crucial second chances and employment opportunities. Every order directly funds this vital path to rehabilitation, turning a simple daily ritual into an act of community support. But beyond its foundational mission, the café remains a joyful, dynamic space to gather.
This summer, it will also offer a menu of items inspired by the citywide ‘Tales on the Tyne’ art trail by St Oswald’s Hospice.Visitors can cool off with six decadent milkshake flavours—including a bubble-gum shake precisely matched to Peter Rabbit’s iconic blue cardigan—alongside themed carrot cakes. The café is also the perfect spot for a full breakfast, a fresh lunch, or a sweet treat.
