Gogh big or Gogh home
A breathtaking fusion of 19th century artistry and 21st century technology is coming to the region this summer in the shape of ‘Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience’.
Don McLean – in his second most famous song – sang evocatively about Vincent van Gogh, warbling on about his “flaming flowers” his “swirling clouds in violet haze” and his “morning fields of amber grain”. And the estimable McLean got his inspiration from merely looking at Van Gogh’s pictures. Imagine what he could have come up with if he ventured inside them. ‘Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience’ is taking over the Utilita Arena Newcastle from 12 July-9 August and it promises to transform the region’s largest entertainment venue into a 10,000-square-foot living canvas. Just wow! Produced by Annerin Productions and Paquin Entertainment Group, the exhibition has already captivated over seven million people worldwide; and now it arrives in Newcastle to offer local audiences a chance to step directly inside the mind of Vincent van Gogh – the Dutch Post-Impressionist whose bold use of colour and emotional depth changed the course of art history. Unlike a traditional gallery where paintings hang silently on white walls, ‘Beyond Van Gogh’ utilizes cutting-edge projection technology to bring more than 300 of the artist’s iconic works to life. Visitors will find themselves literally walking through ‘The Starry Night’, wandering amidst a field of ‘Sunflowers’, and standing under the glow of the ‘Café Terrace at Night’. The experience is heightened by a specially curated musical soundtrack that complements the visual movement. As the brushstrokes swirl and bloom across the walls and floor, the atmosphere becomes one of awe-inspiring immersion, bridging the gap between the viewer and the artist’s emotional reality. And beyond the main immersive gallery, guests can meander through a beautifully designed reflection space. This area includes the striking Sunflower Alley, a tribute to Van Gogh’s most celebrated series of works, providing the perfect backdrop for reflection or photography. Recognizing the diverse needs of the community, the organizers have scheduled several special sessions including SEND-friendly sessions: Dedicated times on Mondays (12pm–2pm) designed for those who benefit from a more sensory-aware environment; Adult-only evening viewings: Offered on Thursdays and Fridays from 5pm, providing a sophisticated atmosphere for couples or friends; Weekend immersive yoga: A unique opportunity on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9am to practice wellness surrounded by Van Gogh’s vibrant landscapes. With a capacity of up to 2,700 visitors per day, tens of thousands are expected to flock to the arena during the 29-day run and early booking is highly recommended. I’m sure Don McLean has already pocketed his tickets.
