Baltic summer blow-out

This year’s summer sizzler at Baltic sees them teaming up with neighbours The Glasshouse for a proper banks of the Tyne takeover.

First port of call—for me at least—at this annual block party is the Art Car Boot Fair, which this year will feature 50 stalls of arts, crafts and more. This sun-soaked celebration of creativity is a pure joy with the best artists and makers from across the region, and beyond, showcasing their work. Also available will be locally sourced food and drinks, with a feel-good soundtrack coming courtesy of some tip-top DJs. Also on the day, two new exhibitions are set to open at Baltic, and I couldn’t be more excited to check out ‘Tish Murtha & Kuba Ryniewicz: Close to Home’. The late Murtha’s images of working-class life in the region are now iconic (Sam Fender has used her work on his sleeves), while Kuba Ryniewicz is one of the finest of the new breed of photographers working out of the north-east. The other show opening is ‘Chitra Ganesh: Journey to the Great Below’, which features new animation, newly commissioned sculptural works, site-specific wall drawing, and much more from this Brooklyn-based artist. The day will also feature workshops, family-friendly activities, and a rooftop cocktail lounge (featuring a Weezy Pop Takeover). The day’s festivities culminate with a Summer Preview Party—think DJs, pizza, cocktails, beer, and soft drinks in Baltic Riverside. That’s free, but booking is essential. DP
