A previous recipient of our Single of the Month slot, this alt/electro-folk artist’s debut album delivers in spades. It’s a release that sees Frankie Archer grabbing hold of traditional English folk songs and warping them into something new and vital by way of all manner of synths and drum machines (along with the odd bent-out-of-shape fiddle, etc). Love and death are the twin obsessions that stalk these tracks, and they’re given extra weight by Frankie Archer’s vocal – a gorgeous Northumbrian burr that, above all else, is suffused with a defiance that gives these songs an extra edge.
