Drop of the dark stuff
Promoters Roman Candle have really struck gold with their latest triple bill, headlined by the force of nature that is Jim Ghedi. Noted for his dextrous 6 and 12-string fingersyle compositions, his more recent work has seen him emerge as one of the most vital voices in contemporary folk. His ‘Wasteland’ album was one of my fave releases of 2025; a stark, brooding masterpiece that explores societal collapse and working-class identity, and delivered with a vocal intensity that leans closer to the raw energy of punk than traditional folk tropes. The evening is bolstered by support from Tom Blackwell (now settled on Teesside, his sound was forged on the Manchester folk circuit and is infused with country, blues and gospel tinges), and Caitlin Gilligan (a Scot, she weaves age-old folk songs into sets of bare-boned and poetically-crafted originals).
Jim Ghedi + Tom Blackwell + Caitlin Gilligan, Sunday 28 June, The Georgian Theatre, Stockton,7pm, £14, georgiantheatre.co.uk
