‘This is Also a Love Story’ sees Sally Hayden reflect on her career as an international correspondent to ask, ‘Might the world be a different place if we more regularly told news stories through the prism of love?’ She explores the light she saw in some of the darkest stories she has reported on across the world: the ‘artificial families’ formed after the Rwandan genocide, separated couples nurturing their relationships during war in Ukraine, and people meeting grief with loving connection in the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami in Japan. Her findings stress journalists’ responsibility to humanise people, and the love she has seen prevail in the most tragic of times. This book is about the defiant power of love during crisis, particularly in a world with leaders who favour detachment over empathy. A fascinating read. IM
