In IT’S THE LONG GOODBYE, post-punk duo The Twilight Sad are joined by an impressive roster of collaborators, including Arab Strap’s David Jeans, Mogwai’s Alex Mackay and Robert Smith himself. The album is a clear levelling up of their sound: James Graham’s lyrics are at their most visceral, drawing on themes of bereavement as layers of guitars creates waves of fuzzy, distorted textures and melodic synths cut through the noise. It’s these types of contrasting sounds that give The Twilight Sad a distinctly euphoric sound, despite the melancholy that inhabits their music.
