This fifth album from singer and bassist Thundercat serves up a sumptuous display of silky funk, with a side of star-studded collaborations including Tame Impala, A$AP Rocky and a recording from Mac Miller before his death in 2018. Beneath the glossy production, though, Thundercat exposes his vulnerability through thoughtful, frank and self-deprecating lyrics that tell stories of heartbreak and navigating life behind a mask as a neurodivergent man. The contrast between these themes and the smooth, beautiful sound makes for a really interesting and refreshing listen, while the fusion of jazz, soul and pop with a modern spin creates a nostalgic yet futuristic atmosphere.
