Where memories bloom
In the heart of the Tyneside, a unique and poignant art project is taking shape to honour those we have lost. The ‘Meadow of Memories’ is a centerpiece of the ‘Peter Rabbit: Tales on the Tyne’ art trail, but it’s more than a sculpture: it’s a communal tribute that transforms grief into a beautiful, shared work of art. The hand-painted piece takes the shape of a bench designed and painted by local artist Julia Stafford. The bench (which will be on display in Newcastle Cathedral before it returns to St. Oswald’s Hospice) is adorned with a delicate meadow scene featuring colourful leaves all watched over by the beloved character Peter Rabbit. But what makes this sculpture truly special is that it is designed to be “written” by the community. Each leaf on the bench serves as a space to commemorate a loved one, creating a collective meadow of names that celebrate lives lived and memories cherished. Participating in this tribute (a leaf dedication costs £30) is a simple yet powerful way to support hospice care while creating a lasting legacy. GM
‘Peter Rabbit: Tales on the Tyne’ runs from 15 July-14 September with Newcastle and North Tyneside set to be transformed by the arrival of super-size sculptures. More from: talesonthetyne.co.uk (More on ‘Meadow of Memories’ from stoswaldsuk.org/get-involved/meadow-of-memories).
