Natalie Jane Hill - Hopeful Woman
The second album from this Tyneside
nine-piece sees them dialling up their
“viper jazz” sound for an exuberant
release that pushes old-timey swing
into some new and ecstatic pastures.
‘Ice Cream for Breakfast’ is real kick-
your-heels-off and party stuff (“Let’s
go to the bay and jump in the sea,
we’ll have ice cream for breakfast and
cocktails for tea”), while the saucy
‘Double Rations’ definitely isn’t about
dinner (“Need double rations just
to keep me satisfied”). And whether
they’re coming over all bluesy rock
and roll (‘Should We Dance’) or hitting
‘Cry Me a River’-like vibes (‘Lowdown’),
their playing is pure sizzle and the
vocals straight out of the top drawer.
Pure aural sunshine. RM
