Mat Hunsley - The Things We Need
The debut album from this Newcastle-based singer/songwriter is startlingly good. He blends warm folk with indie/alternative influences in a way that instantly draws you in close to listen to his intimate songs of reflection. And whether he’s examining the slings and arrows of day-to-day existence (“though our lives are quite small, they are full of the things we need”) or looking out into the world (‘If Anyone Asks’ tackles that notorious attack on an ambulance convoy in Gaza), he does so with a clear-eyed sensibility that really hits home. Add in his fine voice and you’re looking at the complete package. GM
