Joji - Piss In The Wind

Joji’s dramatic shift from absurd YouTube comedy to somber alt-R&B music never fails to amaze me - an expertly navigated rebrand that launched the Japanese artist into a whole new stratosphere of success. However, this fifth album suggests he’s not quite sure where to take things next. ‘Piss In The Wind’ is a textbook Joji album - trip hop beats, gentle vocals and hazy electronic production - but in a way that unfortunately feels a little stale. There’s nothing fresh or imaginative to be found here, with Joji himself even sounding disinterested in the understated way he sings the uninspiring lyrics. It seems that a little more reinvention is needed here… LT
