Film and TV composer Isobel Waller-Bridge steps into the avant-garde with this solo project, which is as much concerned with stillness and quiet as it is with music. In ‘Objects’, background noise is brought into focus, with the musical elements feeling like an accompaniment to this rather than taking centre stage. It’s a fascinating approach to composition and unlike anything I’ve heard before; Waller-Bridge is an expert at pairing sounds from her environment with her wide spectrum of influences that range from classical, to baroque, to electronic, to ambient. ‘Objects’ requires patience and an open mind, but you will be rewarded with a beautiful collection of boundary-pushing songs.
