It’s big, it’s BIG, Oh – IT’S ENORMOUS!

‘Monumental’ at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland features artwork from the NGCA collection, selected by second and third year, University of Sunderland fine art students.

The students have been exploring the NGCA collection in the context of their own art practices and analysed the collection’s themes and styles. Each student selected an artwork from the collection which encapsulated ‘the monumental.’ Together the seven chosen artworks examine monumental structures, such as public sculptural monuments, giant vapor trails, melting Icelandic glaciers, crystallised desert landscapes, state systems, and the miner’s cage near Easington Colliery. Exhibited artists are Dan Holdsworth, John Kippin (work pictured), Chad McCail, Vinca Petersen, Mark Pinder, Kelly Richardson and Daniel Silver. University of Sunderland Fine Art students are Bog Balenger, Rupa BK, Steviee Brookes, Lucy-May De Carteret, Kerry Chappell, Megan Hart and Chloeanne Maddison. Jon Weston, Curator of Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art said: “NGCA has a strong and diverse collection of contemporary artwork and seeing these artworks examined, challenged and interpreted from the perspective of committed and rising second (now third) year Fine Art students is exactly what the collection is for. The students explored what monumental means, both in the production of art and in wider society, this has led to a striking and thought-provoking selection of artworks on display within the exhibition.”
