Joanna - Hello Flower
Back in 1989, north-west band Joanna were on the cusp of being The Next Big Thing, and in 1990 the NME called them “the most popular band without a record out”. But being “on the cusp” never actually tipped over into an actual record deal and the band fell by the wayside. However, a bunch of ¼-inch reel tapes were recently discovered in a Manchester apartment, and they make up this album which has all the charm of early Happy Monday and The Charlatans – the band working an indie-dance groove for all their worth. It’s a curio certainly, but one that’ll take you back to those halcyon days. RM
