Tame Impala - Deadbeat

I was very excited for a new Tame Impala album after five long years. Deadbeat is quite the departure from the evergreen psych-rock anthems of third album Currents, which you still hear being played everywhere almost a decade after its release. This new music brings Tame Impala onto the dance floor - it’s all thundering beats, groovy basslines and influences from across the dance genre that range from house, to trance, to Balearic, to lo-fi. For me it’s not quite in the same ballpark as earlier releases, but I also wouldn’t say that this two-step into new territories is a bad move. I’ll never complain about an artist showing some fluidity. LT

Out now on Columbia
