Local: Crane House

If you’re in the market for an exciting new band on the folk/pop scene, then this Newcastle five-piece are packing real quality.

Crane House recently put out their first single ‘Cuban Heel’ and it really slays – and by slays, I mean it arrows straight for your heart and then proceeds to give you the absolute shivers. Among the influences the band cite are The Staves, and they certainly have that atmospheric Laurel Canyon vibe that The Staves capture so well, Crane House’s undoubted melodic chops pushed very much to the fore. And I’ll tell you what else they have in common with The Staves – quite glorious female harmonies. Fronted by two female vocalists, Crane House make full use of their vocal talents on ‘Cuban Heel’, the pair delivering a knockout ballad without having to resort to over-emoting. And the rest of the band are on point, too, conjuring up a subtle sonic backdrop – featuring fiddle, guitar and drums – that is rich with atmosphere but also allows for quieter moments too. They’re a band oozing promise, so get ‘em while they’re hot. DP
