Absolute cinema!

Discover unmissable one-off screenings every week at Baltic with their new year-round cinema programme.

This is great. Baltic – in their level 1 Cinema – are screening the best new releases, along with rare archive films, and it’s the kind of stuff you won’t see anywhere else in the north-east. And among their new programme are some absolute gems including on 5 November Tree of Knowledge (A Árvore do Conhecimento), the latest film from Eugène Green. It’s a fairtytale indictment of neoliberal capitalism which brings together an evil ogre, a teenager, a long-dead Portuguese queen, and a very patient donkey and golden retriever… Also look out for Việt and Nam (banned in Vietnam this film explores the love affair between two young male miners – 12 November), Jarman Award Tour 2025 (a chance to see some of the best new moving image work from the UK with films by artists shortlisted for this year’s Film London Jarman Award – pictured – 19 November), and Leviathan (a documentary like no other, this is a thrilling, immersive film set on and in the sea as a commercial fishing crew navigates the treacherous waves off the New England Coast – 26 November). Our advice: arrive early and swing by the Baltic Kitchen café for your refreshments before the film begins… GM
