The three lasses from LA who make up Automatic have found much favour with those of us who enjoy minimalistic post-punk and no-wave with dollops of melodic knowhow on top. And – pleased to report – their third album is an absolute doozy, those synthy grooves arrowing in on your pleasure zones with heat-seeking accuracy. Tracks such as ‘mq9’ find a real ESG-like punky-funky sweet-spot (with added flute action) while ‘Don’t Wanna Dance’ is a dubby triumph. Lyrically they’re tackling everything from mindless consumerism to automated warfare, which ticks even more boxes for me. RM
