Massa Confusa is the moniker of Ally Morton – formerly of the north-east, but now based in Spain – and this, his fourth studio album, is resplendent with post-punk indie anthems that are given plenty of body by some chunky electronica a la early New Order. He’s focussing on plenty of weighty concerns surrounding illness, genocide, self-harm and asylum seeking, which may make you think this a difficult listen, but it’s anything but by dint of the sheer quality of the tunes. It also helps that he finds an underlying optimism, which, again, comes across in the music. GM
