Home for heroes

Many heroes are being celebrated at Newcastle Cathedral throughout October and early November with special tours being conducted throughout the building that will shine a light on those who helped shaped history.

When Admiral Horatio Nelson was shot during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, it was local lad Admiral Lord Collingwood who stepped into Nelson’s britches (not literally) to make sure that the British fleet was victorious. And, naturally, Collingwood is celebrated in the series of ‘Local Heroes Remembered’ tours which are running this Autumn throughout perhaps Tyneside’s most famous building: Newcastle Cathedral (there is a memorial dedicated to Collingwood inside the cathedral). Also given their due will be feminist firebrand Mary Astell, whose ideas were centuries ahead of their time. And then there is the incredible story of some Danish sailors who found safe harbour in Newcastle during the Second World War. From monuments to stained glass windows these fascinating figures, and many more besides, have been honoured throughout the cathedral and these tours will really bring their stories to light. DP
