Goodlord by Ella Frears

I picked up Goodlord because I was intrigued by the format; an email inspired by poet Ella Frears’ own experience receiving an email from her estate agent asking her to sign up to property handling service ‘Goodlord’. At first the lack of chapters and a clear plot felt unsettling until I realised that was the point. It is a perfect canvas for the chaotic exploration of the dark emotions and memories that escape when feeling encroached upon, and just when you think an anecdote about her past predatory coworkers, the strange art residency she went on, or the rising damp in her flat, will bring her to boil, there’s a darkly hilarious joke thrown in to keep us on edge. It's a fresh take on the emotional consequences of the housing crisis, female fury, and a satisfying read for anyone (everyone) who has ever been at odds with a landlord. IM
