Local: Polyfillas

Are Sunderland’s Polyfillas one of the most exciting bands in the north-east today? I’m answering that with a firm “Hell, yeah!”

When’s the last time you bopped around the kitchen to a song about period poverty? For me it was last Tuesday. The track in question is Polyfillas ‘Period Pad/I’m Glad’ which begins: “I’m glad I carry a pad in my bag / But it’s bad, so bad / That some don’t have pads…” Not your usual bopping around the kitchen material you’d think, but the track (which was our Single of the Month in September) is resplendent with herky-jerky, punky-funky rhythms that teeter rather gloriously into psychedelia. The band has always had a thrilling dimension, but ‘Period Pad/I’m Glad’ feels like a real step up for an outfit built around the singer-songwriter partnership of Ava and Jamie Dangerous. The pair (who host a popular radio show ‘Danger Hour’ on Bunker Radio) have promised a debut album in the future with Jamie stating: “It will have a punk feel to it, but because we both enjoy lots of different genres, the album will sound a lot more varied than just a regular album from a typical punk band.” Can’t wait.
