Local: Mama Lips

No one can ever feel short changed by Pity Me’s Mama Lips as in September they released their 50th album (50!). And – get this! – it’s absolutely wonderful.

I was feeling a tad down this morning – more than a tad, actually – when I decided I’d give Mama Lips’ latest album a spin. It’s plaintive, folky, and of it they say it’s “a solo project of grief music full of hope and complex emotions.” And –what do you know! – by the time the seventh song rolled round (‘Some Place New’) I was enraptured. They sing: “I know this pain can’t last forever – so play me a love song…” before adding “I’m looking for forgiveness, redemption, just trying to find my way to some place new…” There were tears on my face, but it was real balm for my tattered soul. Elsewhere on the album – which is called ‘Life Is Beautiful’ – Mama Lips examines the slings and arrows of humankinds’s misfortunes, often with a surreal eye, and if you yourself have a tattered soul that needs company and/or fixing, then I’d suggest you let Mama Lips’ latest into your life. Take two times a day. DP
