Horne of plenty

‘Round the Horne’ was the biggest radio programme in Britain from the mid to late 60s, and the hilarious comedy is being celebrated in a stage performance which is coming to Middlesbrough in early October.

Penned by maestros Barry Took and Marty Feldman, and starring Kenneth Horne alongside the likes of Kenneth Williams, Betty Marsden and Bill Bertwee, ‘Round the Horne’ regularly faced scrutiny from sundry pearl-clutchers – including those at the BBC – who regarded the show as too risqué, particularly in its liberal use of double entendres. But it garnered enormous audiences – up to 15 million – who took the show’s characters to heart. These included Rambling Syd Rumpo, Charles and Fiona J. Peasemold Gruntfuttock, and, of course, the outrageous Julian and Sandy. This show – which uses Took’s and Feldman’s original scripts – is the perfect homage to this classic.

Round the Horne, Saturday 4 October, Middlesbrough Theatre, 7.30pm, £20, boxoffice.middlesbrough.gov.uk
