Full steam ahead
In 1825 Stockton & Darlington Railway became the first company in the world to operate a public railway that used steam locomotives. And to mark the 200th anniversary of that historic day, all manner of events have been planned.
Is there a more evocative name in rail travel than Locomotion No. 1? Built by George and Robert Stephenson, it became the first steam locomotive a haul a passenger-carrying train on a public railway. And now – to mark the 200th anniversary of that journey – a newly restored replica of Locomotion No. 1, accompanied by the passenger carriage Experiment and traditional coal waggons, will run on sections of the original Stockton & Darlington Railway line, cheered on by thousands of spectators along the route. This will take place over three days (26-28 September) but there’s an extensive programme of other events also set to run that will celebrate this world first. These will include performances such as ‘Ghost Train’ (a spectacular two-part outdoor show featuring a 75-strong cast), exhibitions, a picnic, and much more. Full details from the website, below.
