Local: Tamara Kazziha

The new single from this Newcastle based multidisciplinary artist is most definitely “out there”, and, hey, that’s a very good place to be.

And that single is ‘Restoration’ and of it Tamara Kazziha says: “It’s sung in a made-up language – not as a concept, but because that’s how the sound came through. Direct, embodied, and without needing to explain itself.” I can live with that because ‘Restoration’ contains absolute wonderments. A multi-rhythmic slice of evocative roots music – that encompasses everything from ritualistic dance sounds to ambient folk – it’s a wholly atmospheric track that really takes flight. She adds: “This song is a chant, a prayer. It bypasses my thinking mind and lets me connect to the deeper layers of what I’m feeling. That’s why it’s not in English, because healing doesn’t always speak in words.” We last heard from Kazziha when she released her beguiling ‘Calling the Moon’ EP back in 2023, and with ‘Restoration’ it feels like she’s taken things up another notch. She’s an artist that just can’t be pigeonholed and there are not too many people you can say that about. Bravo! DP
