Local: Chyaro
Isn’t SE19 in London? Sort of Croydon, Crystal Palace, Croydon etc? Yes indeed, and, as it happens, Chyaro was actually born in London, but he’s now based in Newcastle. And we’re very happy to have him because his track ‘SE19’ speaks of a rare talent. It draws deep from the well of storytelling, introspective UK rap (think Loyle Carner etc) and, well, I’ll let Chyaro paint the picture: “SE19 traces the real-life story of how my mother (a Black girl raised in Wiltshire who made her way to LSE and law school) and my father (a Jamaican academic who studied at Oxford) met, fell in love, and had me. It’s also about the struggles they faced, the pressure I felt growing up as an only child, and how music eventually became my way of expressing all that I couldn’t say out loud.” If all that sounds a bit heavy going then don’t fret because SE19 has one of those jaunty airs that you can’t help but instantly fall in love with. More please! DP
