If only all Friday nights were like this

One of the region’s finest bands The Unthanks are launching a new eclectic night at The Glasshouse that is going by the name of The Friday Night Club.

Folky go-getters The Unthanks know the score, and so when I heard they were launching a new quarterly show, I had to adopt my best “catch-me-I’m-about-to-swoon” pose. Curated and hosted by the band (they will top and tail each show), the nights will feature musicians, poets, comedians, classical and jazz ensembles, short films, local legends and touring artists. And, pleased to report, the inaugural shindig looks particularly enticing with a line-up that includes the likes of Clara Mann. Mann – an “almost folk” newcomer – will be hitting us up with songs from her brilliant debut album ‘Rift’, a release that has prompted critics to describe her as already having “gone from one-to-watch to one of the best songwriters in the country” (the Independent). Also on the bill is Yorkshire author Fiona Mozley (her superb debut novel ‘Elmet’ was Booker shortlisted), Tim Dalling (who mixes clever storytelling and poetry with the wild fun of old-time variety shows), and members of the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Oh, we’re also promised surprise guests, too. Sold! DP

The Friday Night Club with The Unthanks, Friday 26 September, Sage Two, The Glasshouse, Gateshead, 8pm, from £11.30, theglasshouseicm.org
