Airthief by Michael Kearns

It’s the late 1980s and former World War 2 test pilot Peter Thorpe is now in his 70s. In the past he’s written books about the war but now his publishers would like his new tome to take a more personal angle. Due to his failing memory, however, he’s struggling somewhat. He does know what events he would like to cover though, and they concern a daring mission in which he and Commando Captain Robert Packman set off into occupied France on a top-secret mission to steal one of the gems of the Luftwaffe’s crown: the Focke-Wulf 190. In the present day, Peter is also roped into the recovery of a Spitfire that’s been discovered in a bog. Meanwhile in Berlin, just as The Wall is coming down, Johanna Schreib (aged 21) is interested in her grandfather’s own wartime experiences. While initially slow to get going, the novel packs in plenty of intrigue across a story woven across the decades. GM
