Kesha .
Kesha practically invented the messy party girl pop persona, but despite being a 2010s icon, is her first independent album after years of legal battles with abusive producer Dr Luke. It’s pleasing to see that trademark elements of her music - modulated vocals, pounding beats and attitude-charged lyrics about being wild and carefree - are in fact part of her true musical identity rather than being imposed upon her. However, new sides to her sound are revealed; in ‘CATHEDRAL.’, she showcases her raw vocals and a more heartfelt approach to her songwriting as she muses on her trauma. The album feels a little disjointed, but this is what makes it feel authentic. LT
