McKnight vision

‘Past and Future Pact’ is a new body of work by artist Jill McKnight, which comprises sculpture, works on paper and video, all of which is inspired by Sunderland’s industrial heritage. See it at the NGCA.

Jill McKnight has brought together research from many different sources for this show – including the archives of Sunderland’s Antiquarian Society, displays within Sunderland’s museums, the National Women Against Pit Closure 40th Anniversary Commemoration event, online groups, relatives, friends, residents and students. The voices she’s uncovered bring Sunderland’s history to life with the exhibition telling a story often marginalised in the visual arts, a story of female working-class labour articulated through a body of work drawn from careful research and oral accounts.

Past and Future Pact: Jill McKnight, runs until 9 December, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art Collection Space, Sunderland, sunderlandculture.org.uk
