Bunny by Mona Awad

When a book is described by Margaret Atwood as ‘genius’, you pick it up. That’s how I ended up reading ‘Bunny’, a polarising novel about a creative writing student who’s sucked in to a cult by her rich, Mean Girls-esque classmates. ‘Bunny’ is a female-focussed psychological horror that grabs your attention from the start – but for me, it struggled to maintain it. After a fair few chapters that felt like they did little to push the plot forwards, I found myself wondering when the ‘genius’ would come. And without giving anything away, it did. The ending of this book got me; it was clever, unexpected and delivered a perspective on creativity beyond surface-level comments on pretentiousness and writer’s block. Does that justify the tomfoolery that came before it? Maybe not. But I’m still going to be thinking about this book for a while, so ultimately, I would say it’s worth a read. MG
